DIFF was born in 2008 from Da Nang's determination to create a signature event — something no other Vietnamese city had attempted at comparable scale. In the early years, the festival was modest: two or three competing teams, audiences drawn mainly from the local community. But the quality of the performances set a high bar from the start, one that the organising committee steadfastly maintained. By 2015, DIFF was drawing tens of thousands of spectators on competition nights, turning the Han River waterfront into one of Southeast Asia's most electrifying festival venues. The COVID-19 pandemic imposed a pause from 2020 to 2022 — but when DIFF returned in 2023, its pull had multiplied, with international visitor numbers to Da Nang in June surging dramatically compared to other months of the year.
Each DIFF performance is a scripted artistic work — not improvised pyrotechnics. Teams are notified of their theme months in advance and begin designing their audio-visual score with second-by-second precision. The fireworks are mounted on floating barges in the middle of the Han River, creating a safe distance and equal sightlines from both banks. In 15–20 minutes of performance, each team deploys the full palette of pyrotechnic craft: wide fan bursts blanketing the sky, low-fire shots mirroring on the water's surface, slow-fading glitter effects dissolving like snowfall. An international panel of judges scores technical execution (accuracy of timing, shape, and colour), creative interpretation, and fidelity to the assigned theme. Scores are never revealed until the awards night at the end of the month — sustaining anticipation throughout the entire festival period.
Beyond the official competition nights, DIFF has expanded into an urban festival month. Along Bach Dang Street and the east bank of the Han River, night markets spring up with hundreds of Da Nang food stalls: Mi Quang noodles, pork roll with rice paper, Cau Mong grilled beef, seafood pancakes. Open-air music stages run from afternoon to midnight with live performances. Art light installations — typically themed around 'light and sea' — are erected along the waterfront. Riverside hotels charge peak-month prices in June, but the inner districts of Hai Chau and Thanh Khe still offer plentiful budget options. This is the month Da Nang lives most intensely after dark — the city becomes the most energised version of itself.
Witnessing DIFF in person is something that cannot be replicated on a screen. When the first salvos erupt, the sound wave passes physically through every spectator's chest — fireworks are not merely seen but felt through the entire body. A faint scent of gunpowder drifts in on the river breeze. Light reflected on the water creates a doubled effect — the sky and the river ignite together. Thousands of upturned faces fall silent, then erupt in cheers after each climactic sequence. Calm-wind nights are the finest — smoke disperses quickly, colours linger longer in the air. And when the final performance ends with a cascading, layer-upon-layer grand finale, both banks of the Han River erupt in sustained applause — a collective reflex that has never once failed.

Visitors arriving in Da Nang any time in June will find a distinctive atmosphere even on nights without official competition shows. It is the month the city lives most intensely after dark.
The fireworks barges positioned mid-river give spectators on both banks equally good sightlines. Bach Dang Park on the west bank provides a direct frontal view; the east bank near My Khe Beach offers a wider diagonal angle. Riverside cafés and restaurants typically reserve tables from morning — book ahead if you want a comfortable seated spot with a drink in hand.
Nights with clear skies and light wind produce the finest fireworks — smoke clears quickly and colours remain vivid. Check the forecast 24 hours before and prioritise evenings with a sea breeze. Getting There and Moving Around
During DIFF, traffic around the Han River surges dramatically. Walking or motorbike is the most practical option if you are staying within 3km. Park further away (near Le Duan or Hung Vuong streets) and walk in. Grab and taxis should be booked with a pickup address at least 500m from the main crowd areas to avoid gridlock.
Choosing Your Viewing Spot
Arrive at least 1.5 hours early to secure a good position along the riverbank. Bach Dang Park and the area around Han River Bridge are the best free viewing spots. VIP ticket zones are closer but pricier — worth it only if you want the full grandstand experience.
Practical Notes
Bring water and snacks as riverside food stalls become extremely crowded and often run out of seating. June nights by the river can be breezy — a light jacket is useful. After the show ends, the crowd disperses in waves along the main arteries: moving against the crowd flow or waiting 20–30 minutes makes departure significantly easier.
