On November 30, 2024, Vietnam's National Assembly passed a resolution establishing Hue as a centrally administered city, based on the entire territory and population of Thua Thien Hue province. Hue became Vietnam's sixth centrally administered municipality, joining Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, and Can Tho.
The decision reflects Hue's special status — not only as the nation's foremost cultural heritage center, but also as a city with strong development potential in education, healthcare, tourism, and technology. The "heritage city" model that Hue is pursuing is expected to become a benchmark for sustainable conservation and development across the region.
This elevation to centrally administered status opens a new chapter for Hue, bringing greater investment resources and higher autonomy to simultaneously preserve its heritage and build a modern city.
