Ky Co Beach

Ky Co can only be reached by boat — there is no road — and that isolation alone has preserved the turquoise water, white sand and dramatic rock faces of a sea lagoon people compare to the Maldives, set within the sheer cliffs of central Vietnam.

History & story.

Ky Co sits at the eastern tip of Phuong Mai Peninsula — a small horseshoe bay enclosed on three sides by granite cliff faces rising 50 to 100 metres, with only one side open to the East Sea. No river mouth empties into the bay and no land runoff reaches it — so the sea maintains its turquoise clarity year-round, with visibility allowing you to see the white sand bottom at 5 metres depth. There is no road to Ky Co — the only access is by boat from Nhon Hai port (about 20 minutes) or on foot over the mountain (1–2 hours). This isolation is exactly why Ky Co retains its pristine character despite being a tourist destination for over a decade.

Snorkelling is the primary activity at Ky Co. The coral reef here is considerably more intact than most snorkelling sites along the central coast — with multicolour hard corals, diverse tropical fish, octopus and giant clams. The best snorkelling is at the northern cliff corner of the bay, where depth ranges from 3–8 metres and coral growth is dense. Mask and snorkel sets can be hired directly on the beach (about VND 30,000 per set) — no diving certification required as the depth is manageable for non-divers. The Ky Co boat crew also organises guided snorkelling tours for those wanting to go further from shore.

For the best Ky Co experience, arrive before 9 AM — the first boats depart from 6 AM, and early morning has the calmest sea, clearest water and fewest visitors. From June–August the beach can be very crowded on weekends and holidays. Although infrastructure has improved with toilets, drink stalls and shade areas, Ky Co still lacks a complete waste management system — visitors should carry rubbish back to the mainland. Local authorities are currently considering a daily visitor cap to protect the coral reef.

About 2km north of Ky Co is Eo Gio — a more ferocious granite headland with continuous sea wind. Many visitors combine both sites on the same day: boat from Nhon Hai into Ky Co in the morning, trek over the mountain to Eo Gio in the early afternoon, then walk out to the main road. However the mountain trail has no signage and is quite difficult — ask at Nhon Hai port about current trail conditions. When the sea is rough or winds are strong, boats do not go to Ky Co and the site closes automatically.

"Ky Co is not a destination — it is a place you arrive at and stay longer than planned. Not because there's no boat out, but because you don't want to leave."

Highlights not to miss.

1
The horseshoe bay and turquoise water

The horseshoe bay shape with three mountain walls creates a natural perfection no architect could design: privacy, gentle wind, calm water and morning light entering from a single angle. Water colour shifts from deep blue at the bay centre to pale turquoise at the shoreline — creating a colour gradient photographers spend hours trying to capture.

2
Northern cliff coral reef

The northern cliff corner of Ky Co bay is the best snorkelling point — this is where hard coral growth is densest and water is clearest as it is least disturbed by boat traffic. At 3–5 metres depth you can see giant clams, octopus and brightly coloured fish swimming through staghorn and brain coral formations. Come early in the morning before the water is disturbed by swimmer traffic.

3
Mountain trail to Eo Gio

A hiking trail starts at the far end of Ky Co beach, crosses the granite mountain ridge and connects to Eo Gio headland to the north — about 1.5–2 hours on foot. The trail has no signage and is steep in sections, but the view from the ridge overlooking both Ky Co and the open sea is full reward. Only attempt in calm sea and good weather — and on a first visit, have a local guide.

Visitor tip

Book your boat the evening before by calling numbers posted at Nhon Hai wharf if visiting on June–August weekends — boats can be fully booked from early morning. Bring food and water from Quy Nhon as the stalls at Ky Co are expensive relative to quality.

How to visit & get there.

Getting to Ky Co

Go first to Nhon Hai port — about 10km northeast of Quy Nhon centre, on the Nhon Hai coastal road. From the port, buy a return boat ticket (VND 80,000–100,000 per person) — boats depart regularly from 6:00 AM. Beach entry is an additional VND 40,000 per person at Ky Co. Combine on the same morning with Eo Gio if you are not prone to seasickness and can manage the mountain trek.

At Ky Co

Allow 4–6 hours for a full experience: swimming, snorkelling, relaxing and lunch. Hire a snorkel set on the beach (VND 30,000/set) to explore the coral. Bring strong sunscreen — limited shade and strong water reflection. Don't stay past 4:00 PM — the last boat departs at 4:30 PM and the journey back takes 20 minutes.
