Thien An Hill — Sacred Seal on the River

The people of Quang Ngai call this flat-topped mountain the 'heavenly seal' because its reflection in the Tra Khuc River resembles a cosmic stamp affirming that this land was chosen for settlement since the beginning of time.

History & story.

Thien An Mountain rises 106 metres on the north bank of the Tra Khuc River, approximately 3 kilometres west of Quang Ngai city centre. It is the only mountain on the Quang Ngai plain with a completely flat summit — a profile that creates, from a distance, the illusion of a giant cosmic seal stamped upon the river's face. This geological peculiarity gave rise to its name, 'Thien An Niem Ha' — the heavenly seal that stamps the river — and earned it a place on the 'Ten Scenic Beauties of Quang Ngai' list since the Nguyen dynasty. The mountain's feng shui is traditionally regarded as exceptional: standing at the summit, one looks out in all four directions to an expanse of rivers and open plain — a setting considered supremely auspicious in classical geomantic thinking.

Thien An Pagoda atop the mountain was established in 1694 by the Venerable Phap Hoa — a monk from the Cochinchina domain. According to tradition, when the venerable master passed through this region, he saw an aura glowing above the summit and recognised it as an auspicious sign to establish a hermitage for meditation. Thien An Pagoda began as a small bamboo shelter; over centuries it was rebuilt multiple times and expanded into the substantial temple complex standing today. Inside are a main hall enshrining Shakyamuni Buddha, bodhisattva altars, and a funerary stupa area for former abbots — each stupa a small work of art with fine decorative carving.

From the Thien An summit, the panorama spans the entire Quang Ngai plain with the Tra Khuc River coiling like a silver dragon below, and beyond it the gleaming East Sea. The tomb of poet Bich Khe (1916–1946) — dubbed 'the poet of beauty and love' in Vietnam's New Poetry movement — also lies on the mountain's slope. Each morning, Quang Ngai residents climb to exercise and meditate — the mountain functions as the city's sacred public space rather than as a remote tourist attraction. Groups of students carry their books up to study before examinations, convinced that Thien An's 'brush energy' — the aura of scholarly fortune — will pass into the pages.

Thien An Pagoda festivals take place on the full moon of the first and seventh lunar months, drawing thousands of Buddhists from across Quang Ngai province and neighbouring regions. The festive atmosphere blends solemn Buddhist ritual with folk cultural elements including hat boi classical opera, wrestling, and traditional games. Thien An Mountain is designated a National Historical and Cultural Monument. It is a destination suited simultaneously to those seeking spiritual experience, nature lovers, and visitors who simply wish to survey the central Vietnamese plain from above.

Thien An is no ordinary mountain — it is where heaven meets earth, where the people of Quang Ngai bring their aspirations to release them into the wind off the Tra Khuc River.

Highlights not to miss.

1
Thien An Pagoda and Stupa Precinct

Thien An Pagoda atop the mountain features a triple-arched gate, a main hall enshrining Shakyamuni Buddha, altars for Bodhisattvas Quan Am and Dia Tang, and a funerary stupa precinct housing the tombs of former abbots — white-painted brick stupas standing amid old-growth trees in an atmosphere of rare stillness. The centuries-old bodhi tree in front of the gate is a favourite meditation spot for local residents in the early morning.

2
Tomb of Poet Bich Khe

On the mountainside lies the tomb of poet Bich Khe (1916–1946) — one of the central figures of Vietnam's early 20th-century New Poetry movement. Bich Khe was celebrated for his highly musical verse and symbolist imagery, deeply influenced by French Symbolist poetry. His grave rests peacefully beneath old trees, attracting literary enthusiasts who come to pay their respects and read his verses in the mountain stillness.

3
Summit Panorama

Standing at the Thien An summit, visitors take in the entire Quang Ngai plain in a single sweep: the Tra Khuc River coiling at the mountain's foot, Quang Ngai city extending northward, green rice paddies stretching to distant foothills, and the East Sea horizon to the east. Early morning (6:00–7:00 AM) when mist still clings is the finest time — the entire plain submerged in thin fog like a classical Vietnamese ink-wash painting.

Dawn over the Tra Khuc River

Arrive before 6:30 AM and reach the summit just as the sun rises behind the eastern hills. Dawn light filtering through river mist creates an otherworldly scene — orange-gold reflected in the mirror-flat Tra Khuc. This is one of the finest sunrise panoramas in all of central Quang Ngai.

How to visit & get there.

Climbing to the Summit **Two routes to the top**: a concrete staircase (~200 steps, easy) and a forest trail for those who prefer a more natural approach. **Set off before 7:00 AM** to avoid heat and enjoy the best conditions. The staircase ascent takes about 20–30 minutes.

Pagoda Etiquette **Dress modestly** when entering the temple precinct (no shorts or bare shoulders). **Stay quiet and silence your phone** inside the halls of worship. Festival days (full moon of the first and seventh lunar months) are very crowded — visit on a weekday if you prefer a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere.
